Street Fighter x GI Joe Comic First Impressions

You have to enjoy a good crossover series when it is done right. I felt that this was a long time coming since Street Fighter did cross into the toy market with Hasbro back in the day as G.I. Joe figurines thanks to the 1994 Street Fighter movie. Thanks to IDW Publishing who teamed up with Capcom to come out with Street Fighter x G.I Joe. This should be quite interesting.

Destro and M. Bison sitting on a throne together while street fighters, shadowloo, Joes and Cobra’s fight in a tournament? What in the heck? This reminds me of the scene with Sagat and M. Bison negotiating terms of leadership with the new world order. This plot thankfully is totally different where it would seem to be a simple tournament of being the best. In the hidden agenda of these two masterminds Bison has a device using M.A.R.S technology to harness the essence of the fighters. The more they fight the more powerful this mystery device will become, but for what purpose? Either way Round One Fight!

At First Glance:

This is a concept long time coming and I am so glad that it is here. I am actually shocked that they are willingly in a tournament where two powerful evil doers are running it. At an issue one stand point they leave you questioning a lot of things which is confusing. When it gets into the combat where Snake Eyes vs. C.Viper or Baroness vs. Rufus the action is quite good and leaves you with surprises.

It didn’t take long to realize that even the good guys have their suspicions where Jinx vs. Ryu shows that maybe he threw the fight and has a hidden mission that Joes are in on.

Visuals:

Team up of Emilio Laiso with colors done by David Garcia Cruz was a great combination. Emilio depict some dynamic shots and action showcasing a nice flow of each characters moves and personalities while Cruz did a brilliant job in the color effects really blowing out the images and making it pleasing to look at.

Don’t Forget the Humor:

If I had to pick a favorite scene it would be the fight between Roadblock and Hakan. The fight between them too was not that interesting, but the comedic finish as Roadblock who loses the match gets a taste of Hakan’s final attack only to get sample of his famous oil. The defeat turned into a friendship since Roadblock is the cook of the Joes and Hakan famous Cooking Oil was pleasing to his taste buds. In that a government contract ends the match on a good note between the two.

Second best is the fight between Baroness and Rufus who seems to be a ladies man that I didn’t even know about. He spends most of the match trying to send out his mojo vibes to baroness who in turns underestimates this giant combatant. In the end Rufus shows off his flare and Baroness takes a loss, which brings her and Destro closer together. That love affair between those two is quite awkward.

Conclusion:

First issue it was not that bad, still too early to judge. I am looking forward to seeing how this turns out and if Cobra Commander will make an appearance as an opposition. This was a great pick up and I definitely recommend hitting up Forbidden Planet since they are always nice enough to give you a free insert with your comic book purchase. You do not have to ask, it is just given and that is great comic book appreciation.
