Furi Review

Let me ask you this, what would you do for your freedom? I mean granted you are trapped in a situation with no way out, but would you just wait there and do nothing? For an unnamed warrior who has been scheduled to be tortured for an eternity has been given a chance to fight his way through waves of bosses for his freedom. You think you have the rage and skill enough to get through the final gates?

Furi comes from the same designer Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki and from the great mind of The Game Breakers. They were inspired by such games as No More Heroes, Metal Gear Solid and god hand to bring a skill-based part melee as well as a shooter game. From the jump, you will be pitted with your first boss battle against the Jailer who gives you a tutorial on what to do with your warrior’s abilities. There is a long range attack that will lead you into a short range combat scenario. The key here is to bring your opponents health to a certain level so you can engage them within a circled combat zone and this is where the adrenaline rush kicks in.

Prepare for the rage. This game is all about timing and patience where you will have to see the patterns to succeed in the battles to come. The first match is difficult, but when you go into the second match with a female boss that has six different variations to fight. You will toss the controller. It took me a bit of trying and a lot of anger management to understand what I was dealing with. However, I enjoyed the challenge that came before me. The unique style of Furi brings in a weird way of how the combat functions that can work against you or for you. If you take out one health box, you will gain back a health box and full health that you lost. However, if the opponent takes out one of your health boxes they will regain their full health and possibly restore a previously lost health box. Frustrating? Yes, but it was understandable and helped me plan my strategy.

I felt as if I was in a hong kong action flick where you as the hero or anti-hero are pitted against a strong rival. In the midst of battle, you are being hammered by your foe until you are on your last amount of energy you start noticing certain things about the area. There are tricks to discover when facing your enemies. You have to utilize all of your gifts to get through the battle. You have a dodge, your gun, and your sword as well as a parry feature which can be only used in melee combat. If you parry properly you can gain back health. If you dodge properly you can capitalize on your opponents errors and punish them with your sword slashes. Both sword and the gun can be charged to cause a bigger damage efficacy.

Be calm and be like water as corny as that sounds, it holds weight when playing this game.

The visuals are stunning even down to the rain drops hitting the camera. I have to admit that the funky style with a neo-futuristic atmosphere with some bright visuals made this game stand on its own. You can definitely tell the art style of Afro Samurai from Takashi Okazaki shines with not only the drawings but the mannerisms of each character. There is a certain attitude that translates from the series that has come to Furi that made me go, “Yup, this is his baby!” I admire that.

I hardly ever mention music, but damn the soundtrack to this game is on point. There are certain mixes for each battle that had me pumped. The soundtrack composed by electro musicians Carpenter Brut, Danger, The Toxic Avenger, Lorn, Scattle, Waveshaper, and Kn1ght. All these great people bring a boost to the action and gives you a form of rhythm when fighting.

The Bad:

There are a few hiccups when it comes to the inputs of the game. There are times are some stutter effects that will cause you to hiccup while in combat. I can’t stand a game that gives you some amazing action but forces you to walk to your next mission in some dialogue sequence. That form of the slowdown is a bit annoying in any title. I get the idea that they want you to have some breathing session before you face the next boss, but jeez it tends to get aggravating at times. It is like being on a boring tour.

Conclusion:

Furi brings a style of imagination that will give any gamer the kind of challenge that they can get right into and feel the taste of victory after so much anguish in the battles. Do not get me wrong it might not be a game for everyone to jump right into, but the difficulty is not too ridiculous where it becomes unplayable. There is a chance there that will keep you going unlike some other games that bank of making you pull your hair out by making the game unforgiven by just breathing on a sprite. This is a game that will test your hand-eye coordination and reaction time. It will also test your style of combat to plan each attack wisely and in the end, you will feel accomplish as well as the reward for your efforts.

The beast gamer has spoken and I give Furi 4.5 paws out of 5. It is out now on Windows PC in the Steam marketplace and as well on the PlayStation 4. It was given out for free in July to PlayStation Plus member, but if you missed out the game goes for $24.99 which I think is a fair price for what you will have to deal with in challenges.
