Hands on Review: Gears of War 4
Does Gears of War 4 live up to the hype of the rest of the franchise? During this month Microsoft released their big anticipated sequel to the Gears of War franchise, Gears of War 4 on Xbox One and Windows 10! This is a first time for the series being first to have crossplay. This game is actually really great and proves to be up there for me with Gears of War 3. Gears of War 4 delivers everything on everything you love about the series and then some. Whether you’re a fan of the Story, Multiplayer, Horde mode or just new to the series Gears of War 4 has something for everyone! It doesn’t fall to hit the nail on the head of every one of these modes.
The story takes place 25 years after the events of Gears of War 3 and the son of Marcus Fenix, JD, is the main character. He brings along his friends, Kait and Del on this epic mission. Without giving spoilers away for the story, there’s a lot of emotions you’ll get while playing this campaign. JD proves to not be a clone of his father which really gives it a fresh feel and a new perspective. Del and Kait are more than just allies in the background helping you fight off these mysterious new enemies The Swarm. They’re just as important as JD is to the story. And of course, you can’t just bring in the new crew without them meeting the old crew. Again, without spoiling the story, it proves to right up there with the other sequels in the series.
Gears of War 4’s multiplayer is just as great as ever! Whether you are part of the Swarm or COGS they do a great job at delivering something for every player whether you’re a casual or competitive gamer. While keeping their rank system they also introduce their new Gears Pack system which can be unlocked with in-game credits you earn through playing multiplayer and horde (which we’ll talk about later on). For multiplayer these cards allow you to customize everything from character skins to weapon skins, and to even bounties that’ll score you more points! Gears of War 4 has a range of maps that will satisfy all shooter fans. Some maps are bigger than others which, makes each one of them feel different in their own way. The guns in multiplayer are just as strong as they are in the campaign. Making you figure out which guns work better on certain maps. The absolute best part is that it supports cross-play. So, players on Xbox One and Windows 10 can join up to tackle the campaign, take on other players online with friends on either console or PC, and mow down waves upon waves of enemies in Horde Mode.
Gear of War 4 reinvents their Horde Mode with Horde Mode 3.0. This new version introduces an all-new class based system that has 5 different types of play styles: Soldier(For those players who are all about kicking ass , Sniper(For players who like to fight long range and provide cover for their teammates), Scout(For players who like to run amongst the battlefield getting close and collecting points from fallen enemies for the Fabricator), Engineer and Heavy(For players who are all about the big guns and like blowing large groups or bigger enemies the hell up). Each with their own unique way of taking on these Hordes of Swarms and other enemies with their set of guns and skills. This is the part where those Gears Packs I mentioned earlier come in handy. These classes also have what’s called Skill Card’s that can be used to help you and your team stay alive and survive to get to level 50! Some of these cards range in helping you by increasing the damage you do, to increasing your ammo capacity, to getting more points to fortify your area or give you discounts on certain fortifications. Then there are some rare ones that do special things at the Fabricator (a device used for generating fortifications and buying guns in times of need.) I loved the challenge it provides as you try to conquer all 50 waves.
Overall Gears of War 4 is looking to be around for a long time until they make another one. This game is also now included in Esports. I got good vibes all around with this game. If you have Xbox One or Windows 10 PC pick it up and Enjoy!
Final Verdict: 4.5 Paws out of 5
