The Silver Lining – Haunted Castle Experience Released as a Free Exclusive Teaser

Phoenix Online Studios has released The Silver Lining – Haunted Castle Experience, an short entry based on the King’s Quest fan-developed series, earlier this month for PC, Mac, Linux and a VR compatible HTC Vive version to come. This special teaser is available for free exclusively at the Phoenix Online Store for PC, Mac, Linux, and VR-compatibility the HTC Vive.

Despite being a typical point and click adventure game like the ones that dominated the 90s, there are no puzzles in this teaser, rather there are haunted homages to characters and scenes originally from the King’s Quest universe. This teaser explores a classically haunted castle where the player has to find and collect pieces of Pandora’s Box to unlock a special look into what lies ahead.

Played in first-person, movement is performed using the keyboard: WASD or the arrow keys, and the player can interact with objects when the cursor changes colors. Visually, the game is very dark which adds to the eerieness, and you can’t proceed into the haunted castle without first picking up a lantern. The audio, through voice acting, music and other sounds, all really add to the haunted atmosphere. The menu option allows players to increase the walk speed which sets me at ease throughout the teaser.

It’s worth checking out if you’re a fan of the King’s Quest, or the Silver Lining.

The fifth and final episode: A Thousand Times Goodnight is launching in 2017, after multiple delays since episode 4 in 2011. In the first four episodes of The Silver Lining, King Graham traveled the Land of the Green Isles in search of a cure for a sleeping curse placed on his children, Alexander and Rosella. Episode 5 will see the journey into the land of dreams to free their children and confront their enemies in one final stand of darkness and light. All four episodes are available for free for PC at the Phoenix Online Store.

”We’ve been steadily working on Episode 5 for a long time, and we’re finally at a point where we feel we can confidently promise it will be out next year,” said Katie Hallahan, PR Director and co-designer of The Silver Lining. “The Haunted Castle Experience is a unique way to give a sneak peek of what’s to come while having some fun with the Halloween season, plus we got to test the waters with a VR-compatible experience. And this is just the beginning of the lead-up for Episode 5. There’ll be more news coming as we get into 2017 and closer to announcing a definite release date.”

Phoenix Online Studios is an independent video game publisher dedicated to bringing compelling story-driven titles, which first began as a group of Roberta William’s King’s Quest fans coming together to create an unofficial sequel to the series, or what we now know as The Silver Lining. This is the same studio that bought the 20th anniversary of Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller, and Moebius: Empire Rising.
