Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Future Tone Review

Is it 2017 already!? Hey, guys, I know it’s been a minute since I last saw ya! Let alone my last review. 2016 sure flew by quickly and dragged a mixed emotion of gaming high lows. From the mood crushing SFV, delightful surprise of Odin Sphere, Glory of KOF14, and the over the top sheer disappointment of FF15 (that’s a rant for another day) the only thing on my mind is new year new games! And what better way to kick off the new year with a little groove? I can’t remember the last time I played a Rhythm game? Can you? Show of hands here people. Well for all you with your hands down Japan’s favorite Vocaloid and her crew are here to start your gaming year with a beat! Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone is no doubt a good way to kick off your 2017 game campaign!

Overview:

Well, there’s not a story here guys. Rather players meet an objective. Players choose from a list of songs and have to get through the entire song trying to stay on the beat. You can choose your favorite Vocaloid to jam out to the tune. But only when the songs, not Vocaloid specific. The loids don’t just stand there and sing the song they will need help from yours truly aka you the player. All players have to do is hit or hold the icons at the right moment. Sounds easy enough, well it ain’t! Staying on rhythm sure did a number on my ego. Trying to aim for a perfect score, but obtaining a good&safe level will keep your liod singing all the way to the end. But miss these guys and your poor Vocaloid suffers the consequence of health drain. Miss too many rhythm icons and your Vocaloid is canceled.

GamePlay/Graphics:

Do you like bright neon colors? You know, borderline seizure inducing bright neon colors? Well if you don’t I regret to inform you that’s where the art direction went in this game. The graphics are a raver’s dream. Super bright colorful poppy neon colors. So much so they hurt my eyes. But what else would I expect from a game about Vocaloid?

For all of the newbies, the game starts off with a tutorial explaining how to play. So kudos to the developers for getting that out of the way first thing. The goal here is to clear the songs as stated above. What I didn’t say was clearing songs will earn you points to customize your Vocaloid. There are full costumes plus tons of add-ons. Now that thing I said about this game killing my ego? If you’re a first timer good luck, you WILL need it. This game is NO JOKE! Just because everything is all bubblegum neon colors doesn’t mean it plays as such. It’s extremely difficult. The icons are fast and come from all corners of the screen! If that wasn’t bad enough someone on the development team thought it was a great idea to have bright neon colored icons up against a bright neon-colored background. I would space out, watch the Vocaloid and miss icons because they blended in with the Vocaloids. So STAY ON BEAT! It works wonders!

As far as the songs go there are 2 categories “Future Tone” which sounds more auto tone and computerized, and ”Colorful Tone” more poppy and cute. Both are difficult no matter what mode you put it on. Easy Normal Hard and for you adrenaline junkies Extreme mode. If you are bad ass enough to conquer all the modes, there are song modifiers to make the game even harder than it already is! Hidden Icons, High Speed, and Sudden modifiers are sure to put the most seasoned players to the ultimate test! If you’re a novice like me No Fail and Practice mode has got you covered.

Aside from that, there’s a Gallery to view stats and a playlist feature allowing you to put all your favorite tunes in a playlist so you can play your favorite music without having to sort through the song list.

Grade:

Overall this is a great way to start off 2017. It’s hard which for us hardcore gamers will keep us coming back to get the 100% on all difficulties. For the newbies, there are modes that will get us on track to that 100%. The only issue I really had was the design. Again bright colored icons against the bright colored background is not a good idea. So for that reason, only Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future tone gets a 4 out of 5!
