Tekken 7 Xbox One Review
How long would you hold a grudge? Are you the type of person that needs to settle the score or can you just let it go and move on? Kazuya has been taken by his demons at a young age, but can you blame him after his father threw him off a freaking cliff? Years we were under the notion that Heihachi only did this in order to see if his son was strong enough to survive and that is just poor parenting. Tekken 7 brings the King of Iron Fist tournament to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC, but will it deliver?
“Children begin by loving their parents; after a time they judge them; rarely, if ever, do they forgive them.” – Oscar Wilde
The story is told by a reporter who has faced tragedy at the hands of the Mishima Zaibatsu and G Corporations world war that was started by Jin Kazama. Nina Williams now leading the Zaibatsu in hopes to find Jin after he defeated Azazel during the events of Tekken 6. Heihachi takes advantage of the distraction to put Nina under his control and once again gain the power of the Zaibatsu. Now there is another part of this story that leads to Akuma on a bounty hunt for Heihachi and his son Kazuya. The story mainly focuses on both Kazuya and Heihachi while touching base with Lee, Lars and Alisa. One huge dysfunctional family. However, will this be the end of the legacy? I am not going to spoil too much, but the devil is in the details.
Tekken 7 brings a nice style to the 3D fighting platform where it longer feels like a button masher as previous titles were. It has a more fluid technical fight mechanics with the net coding vastly improved from Tekken 6 and Tag Tournament 2. I have had a few online matches with no lag or struggles to find a match unlike what I have been hearing from some of my friends on PSN while I am on Xbox. The customization is always fun to mess around with to make your character unique when you face others in the online realm.
The best thing about Tekken 7 you can unlock the in-game stuff quite easily and not with micro-transactions. These challenge players to be the best to earn the funds to unlock in-game items or to unlock items by succeeding in specific challenges. Practice makes perfect though, in order to accomplish far in Tekken, this is not just any fighting game. This will make you rage, but that is good because it will force you to learn, adapt and get good. The practice area is not my favorite, but you can manually go through each character move sets and master each as you go along. As usual, you can change the CPU trainer to whatever difficulty suits you best. This is your fighting lab so start training.
There are many unlockables outside of creating your card or customizing characters. You can take a nice historical walk through of all the Tekken titles that ever came out on consoles with the right amount of gold, so unlock them all.
There is no Roger Jr! They kept Kuma, Panda, and King…yeah I know he is not a real animal but dammit it was a stupid move. I am hoping with the DLC and the support of the fans we may see a return of a lot of characters and maybe Gon too. The story mode is a bit harsh where Normal is hard, Hard is Hardest and the Hardest Difficulty feels like you are fighting nothing but gods. You will rage and you will get frustrated, but again practice and you shall see victory. Other than that, the only bad you can find is if you nitpick.
Buy this game, that is just my final thought on the matter and as frustrating as it was to fight Devil Kazuya in full form and the special battle against Akuma. I am having a blast with a solid fighting game and the story itself as well done and brought a new light to years of the battle with the Mishima clan. Tekken 7 deserves 4 paws out of 5 and be sure to check out the video review below.
